crafting in the park

hello,
i moved to eugene a few months ago and have SO been looking forward to the wonderful summer weather.  in order to take advantage of the climate and the city, i was hoping to put together "projects in the park." i would plan out an art or craft or DIY project, hopefully have supplies and directions, and a set time so that we could all come together to work on these little individual projects while having casual conversation and a place for new ideas and inspiration. my first challenge was to find a place that i could post a location, time, and project idea easy and free. now that i've found that on this website i hope to find others interested in joining in on the fun. let me know if this is something that just might interest you

thanks!

Short-Term Volunteer Opportunities

Hi everyone,

I'll be welcoming a group of four young professionals from Southeast Asia to Eugene at the end of May. I was hoping to get them involved in some kind of volunteer project for one of the afternoons when they will be available (on a Wednesday).

Does anyone have some ideas for some one-time volunteer projects and opportunities where basically you can just show up, get a quick orientation or instruction, and do the project for a couple of hours? I have Food for Lane County in mind, but if anyone has other suggestions, I'm all ears. Another idea might be for them to do a brief cultural presentation to a classroom or senior center - does anyone know of any schools or organizations that might benefit from this?

The specific date they'll have available is Wednesday May 23, in case anyone knows of any events that might be going on during that time which may be in need of one-time volunteers.

Thanks!

Bored with karaoke

Hello Eugene,

What are some of singing groups/choirs in the Eugene area, preferably ones that perform locally? I'd like to audition/join something like Divisi (but I'm not a college student anymore). Thanks!

West Eugene EmX Named for Federal Funding

Lane Transit District (LTD) has been notified by the Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) that the West Eugene EmX project has been named for funding through the federal Small Starts funding program. An allocation of $19 million is included in the President’s Fiscal Year 2013 budget, and a total of $74,999,999 has been allocated to complete the project.
This funding notification is one additional step in a long federal process that includes the completion of the West Eugene EmX Environmental Assessment. LTD anticipates that the FTA will release the environmental assessment for public review in March. When released, the environmental assessment will be available for public review and comment for 45 days. At the conclusion of the comment period, LTD will respond to the comments and return the document to the FTA for final review. If the FTA finds that impacts have been mitigated and no significant impacts remain, then a Finding of No Significant Impacts (FONSI) will be issued. At that point the environmental process is complete and the project moves into a final local review. This local review involves the Eugene City Council and the LTD Board of Directors “reaffirming” the selection of the locally preferred alternative (LPA). The LPA is the route the EmX vehicle would travel from the Eugene Station to the terminus at Commerce Street in West Eugene.
LTD General Manager Ron Kilcoyne noted, “This is exciting news. Selection for funding through the rigorous Small Starts funding program illustrates the merits of the West Eugene EmX project. The District continues to work diligently to mitigate remaining impacts and will deliver a quality EmX service to West Eugene. Should the Eugene City Council and our Board agree to move the project forward, LTD and its partners will move into project development and begin preliminary engineering in the coming year.

“The President’s commitment to effective public transit programs like the EmX is great news for Oregon,” said Senator Jeff Merkley. “While the President’s budget is just one step in the funding process, it shows a commitment to public transportation, and I applaud the President for his vision. I continue to be impressed by the EmX model and I look forward to both the jobs it will create for Lane County and the service it will provide for the community.”

They just need to stop with this crap, honestly this city really does not need this kind of service

.edit: Maybe I didn't give my statement enough thought. Apologies to anyone that was offended... but it might do you well to remember there are rules about what sort of talk is okay in here. And don't forget, there are two sides to this EmX thing... click here.

Did you witness a hit-and-run collision with a bicyclist on Monday night?

Hello fellow Eugenians,

We are currently looking for any information about a hit-and-run collision that took place around 5:30pm on Monday evening: November 14, 2011. The incident happened on 18th Street between Hilyard and Alder in Eugene, near the Life Lutheran School/bus stop. The suspect did not yield as they were turning and collided with a female bicyclist as they turned into the Life Lutheran School parking lot, paused briefly before fleeing the scene through the parking lot and turning onto Hilyard - nearly running over the bicyclist's head in the process.
The vehicle is described to be a older style Ford pickup truck with "FORD" in capital letters across the back tailgate. The color may have been a red, orange, brown, yellow, or gray, but it is uncertain as the suspect drove off quickly through a dark parking lot before the victim could identify the color and license plate number. The car will likely have minor dents/damage to the front-right grill or side.

If you witnessed this event and have any information pertaining to the suspect or the vehicle, please do not hesitate to contact the local police. You can report a crime online: http://www.eugene-or.gov/portal/server.pt?open=512&objID=474&PageID=4283&cached=true&mode=2&userID=2
You can also call (541) 682-5111 and ask to report a case of reckless driving. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and efforts.
Sincerely,
The Bicyclist.

A Night With Dionysos

Hey everyone, wanted to spread the word about the reading/discussion my partner is doing on Friday at a local metaphysical store:

Local author and polytheist H. Jeremiah Lewis will be reading selections from his latest book Ecstatic: For Dionysos at Metamorphosis Spirit on Friday, November 11th. Ecstatic is a unique collection of poetry, essays, short fiction and devotional writing honoring Dionysos (or Bacchus) – the ancient Greek god of wine, women, madness, drama and vegetation, among much else.

Afterwards there will be an open discussion and Mr. Lewis will field questions from the audience about the history, contemporary worship and paradoxical nature of this most fascinating of deities. Copies of Ecstatic will be available for purchase and can be personally signed by the author. There will also be complimentary refreshments served.

So come with a healthy appetite and a hunger to learn more about Dionysos, whom scholar Walter Otto described as “god of ecstasy and terror, of wildness and of the most blessed deliverance.”

Does anyone want two cute female rats?

I have two young and sweet female rats that came from a good intentioned friend, who didn't ask me at all if I was able to have them right now and I'm worried if I give them away on craigslist they'll end up as snake food :(

She heard me talking about wanting rats sometime in the future and just showed up at my apartment with them. I tried to be okay with it for a few days but it's really not working out. I work full-time and I wasn't at all prepared, my apartments small and I don't have the time. This friend had suggested I adopt a rat off craigslist and I told her I wasn't ready for one yet. So she does it for me, and drops them at my door step. Sorry, frustrated.

So dear community if any of you can help take these girls away, preferably today, I would be grateful. Their cage is small for both of them, but not terrible, they have a food dish/water bottle and I have food I can give you.

Pleeease :( I go back to work tomorrow and they'll get ignored all day again. E-mail or commenting on here is totally fine.
